Italy becomes 17th member of GNEP

Italy has become the 17th country to join the Global Nuclear Energy Partnership (GNEP) - an international framework aimed at expanding nuclear power worldwide while managing nuclear waste and reducing proliferation risks.
US energy secretary Samuel Bodman confirmed Italy’s membership at the 20th World Energy
Congress Ministerial Forum in Rome.
Mr Bodman said that by becoming a member of the GNEP, Italy is joining a growing group of nations committed to developing solutions to power a clean, safe and reliable energy future. He said that to increase global energy security, producing and consuming nations alike must make “robust investments” in a diversity of energy sources.
The GNEP began in February 2006 with five original members: China, France, Japan, Russia and the US.  In September 2007 another 11 nations agreed to join.  They were: Australia, Bulgaria, Ghana, Hungary, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovenia and Ukraine.
At the second GNEP ministerial meeting, energy officials agreed to form a Nuclear Fuel Services Working Group under the GNEP, which will focus on practical measures and benefits for comprehensive fuel services, such as fuel leasing, and other arrangements for spent fuel management.
